The Brazil cheat sheet

Written by a family who lives here. Every price and every phrase below was checked on August 15, 2026 — no filler, and nothing on this page is for sale.

No cost figures on this copy. The dollar breakdown is built from the answers you give on the calculator, and this page was opened without them, so we are not printing a number we did not calculate. Run the calculator and your total will appear right here.

Part 1

Tourist price vs. local price

All prices August 2026 · exchange rate 1 USD = R$5.19

What tourists usually payWhat a local paysHow to pay closer to the local price
Sugarloaf cable carR$205 ($39.50) — the international full-price ticket. The booth will offer R$325 ($62.62) “VIP fast access”R$160 ($30.83) Promo Brasil · R$89 ($17.15) Bilhete Carioca for Rio residentsYou cannot legally buy the Brazilian rate. But you can skip the R$325 upsell by booking a timed slot at bondinho.com.br in advance. And you can hike the free Morro da Urca trail and buy only the second leg
Corcovado trainR$134 ($25.82)R$134 ($25.82) — no foreigner surcharge hereBook at tremdocorcovado.rio, never from a street reseller. The official Paineiras van is R$87 ($16.76) if you would rather not take the train
Botanical GardenR$80 ($15.41)R$40 ($7.71)No workaround — the double price is official policy. But Parque Lage, 8 minutes up the same street, is free and has the better photo. Do both, pay once
Airport (GIG) to CopacabanaR$80–155 ($15.41–29.87) airport taxiR$50–90 ($9.63–17.34) Uber or 99Order the app from Departures, Floor 2, Gate D — not the arrivals curb. Never accept a ride from someone who approaches you inside. Avoid the Aerotaxi and Aerocoop desks. 99 usually undercuts Uber by 10–20%
Phone data (3 days)$40–60 for an airport “tourist SIM” kioskeSIM: $11 (Airalo Brazil, 3 days unlimited) · $25 for 7 daysInstall the eSIM before you fly. A real Brazilian prepaid chip requires a CPF number and a physical store — not happening on a 3-day trip
Water and acai on the beachRoving vendor: acai R$35 ($6.74) a cup — the quoted price in the March 2026 Arpoador scam case — coconut water R$10–15Numbered Orla Rio kiosk with a printed menu: bottled water about R$5, grilled queijo coalho R$10, iced mate R$8, corn R$15Buy at a numbered kiosk, not from a walking vendor. Ask the price before he opens the cooler. Pay cash in small bills. If you must use PIX, read every digit on the screen
CaipirinhaR$30–50 ($5.78–9.63) at a beachfront kiosk or an Avenida Atlantica terraceR$15–20 ($2.89–3.85) at a neighborhood botecoWalk two blocks inland. Same cachaca, same lime, half the price, better company
Draft beer (chopp)R$15–20 ($2.89–3.85) beachfrontR$12 ($2.31) at a boteco — that is the Adega Perola priceSame rule. The good beer is never on the sand
Getting around all dayR$150–250 ($28.90–48.17) in UbersR$7.90 ($1.52) a metro ride, flat fare, any distanceTap your own contactless Visa/Mastercard at the metro gate. No card to buy, no ticket line
Beach chair and umbrellaAgreed after the fact = whatever he saysR$10–15 chair · R$15–20 umbrella · tip the barraqueiro R$5–10 when you leaveAgree the number before you sit down. Then actually tip on the way out — that is how the local keeps the good spot next time
Two money rules worth more than this whole table.
1. When a card machine asks whether you want to pay in dollars or in reais — always choose REAIS. “Dynamic currency conversion” costs you 2–4% above market, every single time.
2. You do not pay Brazil’s IOF tax. IOF applies to Brazilians using Brazilian cards abroad. Your U.S. card spending in Brazil is zero-rated. What you do pay is your own bank’s foreign transaction fee, 0–3% — check that before you leave, not after.
Beach-kiosk prices in Rio have no official published table. The acai, coconut water, caipirinha and chair figures are ranges drawn from 2026 guides and news coverage, and the R$35 acai is what a vendor charged in the Arpoador case — already a tourist price. Treat them as ranges, never quotes.

Part 2

Ten Portuguese phrases you will actually use

Pronunciation written for an American ear. Say the CAPITALIZED syllable louder. Brazilians are delighted by any attempt — the bar for “you speak Portuguese!” is genuinely this low.

PortugueseSay it like thisWhat it meansWhen
Oi, tudo bem?oy, TOO-doo BENG?Hi, how’s it going?Walking into anywhere. This replaces “hello.” Nobody says bom dia to a bartender
A conta, por favor.ah KOHN-tah, poor fah-VORThe check, please. In Brazil the check never comes until you ask. Sit there all night otherwise
Quanto custa?KWAN-too KOOS-tah?How much is it?Before he opens the cooler, before she starts the henna, before you sit in the chair
Ta caro.tah KAH-rooThat’s expensive. The polite carioca way to push back. Say it with a smile and you will often get a better number
Nao, obrigado. (man)
Nao, obrigada. (woman)
nowng, oh-bree-GAH-doo / oh-bree-GAH-dahNo, thank you.The ending changes with your gender, not theirs. A firm nao, obrigado ends 90% of beach sales pitches
Sem gelo, por favor.seng ZHEH-loo, poor fah-VORNo ice, please. For drinks. Ice at established bars and restaurants in Rio is fine — but if you would rather not, this is the phrase
Onde fica o banheiro?OHN-jee FEE-kah oo bahn-YAY-roo?Where’s the bathroom?Beach kiosks charge about R$2. Have coins
Nao falo portugues.nowng FAH-loo por-too-GESSI don’t speak Portuguese.Say this in Portuguese and watch the whole conversation get friendlier
Voce aceita cartao?voh-SEH ah-SAY-tah kar-TOWNG?Do you take cards?Essential at the Fort (cash/PIX only) and at the Botanical Garden gate (cash/PIX only)
Pode chamar um Uber pra mim?PAW-jee shah-MAR oong OO-ber prah meeng? Can you call me an Uber?At the end of dinner, so you wait inside the restaurant instead of on the sidewalk with your phone out
One cultural note that saves you money and awkwardness. The 10% service charge printed on your restaurant bill is the tip. It is legally optional in Brazil (Law 13.419/2017), almost everyone pays it, and there is no culture of tipping on top of it. Do not add 20%. Beach kiosks and by-the-kilo buffets usually do not charge it at all.
