Updated 2 September 2026. Rock in Rio opens in two days, on Thursday 4 September. The city’s operations plan below is the one published for this edition and is still the current version as of today.
Rock in Rio opens the gates on Friday, 4 September, and the part that decides whether you have a good night is not the lineup. It is the ride home. Two days out, the city has published its full operations plan for the festival — traffic, transport, policing, medical posts — and it answers the questions the ticket page never does.
I was born in Rio and I have lived here for 52 years. Every edition, the same thing happens: tens of thousands of people walk out of the Parque Olímpico at two in the morning and discover that the plan they had was not a plan. So here is what the city actually committed to this year, and what it means if you are flying in from the United States.
The single most important line in the whole plan
The roads around the Cidade do Rock close at 2 p.m. and stay closed until 5 a.m., on all seven festival days. Not “get busy”. Close.
Avenida Embaixador Abelardo Bueno is shut along its whole length. The others are shut in stretches: Avenida Engenheiro Carlos Carvalho between Estrada Coronel Pedro Corrêa and Estrada do Arroio Pavuna; Estrada Coronel Pedro Corrêa from the BRT turnaround to Abelardo Bueno; the side lane of Avenida Salvador Allende heading toward Bandeirantes. Rua Aroazes, Avenida Jaime Poggi, Rua Franz Weissman, Rua Francisco de Paula, Rua Jorge Faraj and Rua Bruno Giorgi are on the list too.
Access inside the cordon is controlled by plate-reading cameras, with registered residents cleared through and everyone else turned back. There are seventeen CET-Rio tow trucks positioned around the perimeter and parking is banned outright. If your plan involves a car, you do not have a plan.
The three ways in, and what each one costs
| Option | Fare | What it actually is |
| MetrôRio | R$ 7,90 single | Lines 1, 2 and 4 on special operation. Line 4 takes you to Jardim Oceânico, where you connect to the BRT. |
| BRT Expresso Rock in Rio | R$ 29 per person, per day — round trip included | Three dedicated services: SE008 from Jardim Oceânico to the Centro Olímpico (30 min), SE009 from Alvorada to Morro do Outeiro (18 min), SE010 from Paulo da Portela (40 min). Sold only in the Jaé app; one account can buy for up to ten people in a single purchase. |
| Metro + BRT Expresso together | R$ 44,80 for the round trip | The combined cost the city itself puts forward as the standard route in and out. |
| VLT Carioca | R$ 5 | Line 1 (Terminal Gentileza × Santos Dumont) runs 24 hours on all seven days, with an express service between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. every 60 minutes. Your friend if you are staying downtown. |
Under ten dollars gets you there and back on the official route. Against a R$ 870 ticket, arguing about it is not worth the three hours you would lose.
“The metro runs 24 hours” is not quite true, and the difference matters at 3 a.m.
Several outlets ran the line that the metro operates around the clock during the festival. The operator’s own notice is narrower, and the distinction is exactly the kind that strands people.
Jardim Oceânico is open 24 hours for boarding. Every other station keeps normal hours and, after regular closing, stays open for exit only.
Read that twice if you are staying in Copacabana. You can ride out of the festival and step off at your station in the middle of the night. What you cannot do is decide at 1 a.m. that you will get on the metro somewhere else and head back in.
Two apps to sort out before you fly
Neither of these works well from a queue on a Brazilian mobile network at 6 p.m. on a Friday. Do both at the hotel, on wifi, the day you land.
- Quentro — your ticket. Entry is digital only. No paper, no PDF, no screenshot at the gate. The ticket has to be activated in the app, using the email on your Ticketmaster account, before you get to the venue.
- Jaé — the only way to buy the BRT Expresso fare. There is no ticket window at the turnstile for it.
What the city and the state put behind the fence
The scale of the operation is the part visitors never see, and it is worth knowing what is there when something goes wrong.
- Security: the state has announced 7,680 agents across the operation — military police, civil police, the drink-driving enforcement teams and the fire brigade. Of the civil police contingent, 725 work inside the Cidade do Rock itself. The city adds 478 public order agents and a municipal guard of around 400 a day, 4,708 across the full 1–18 September operation.
- Eyes: 800 cameras and roughly 250 operators at the city’s operations centre, plus three drones watching crowd flow and traffic.
- Medical: six medical posts inside the Cidade do Rock with 16 ambulances, run by the festival. Hospital Municipal Lourenço Jorge and CER Barra are the reference units, with reinforced shifts.
- Traffic: 210 CET-Rio staff, 40 motorcycles, 39 variable message panels.
- Cleaning: 142 street sweepers a day across three shifts, and 350 waste containers along the route.
- Consumer protection: 22 Procon agents on site, which is the number to remember if a vendor tries to charge you a foreigner price.
- Women’s safety: 65 professionals a day — psychologists, social workers and lawyers — through the city’s women’s policy secretariat.
The measles line nobody expected
One item in the health plan is aimed straight at arrivals: on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each festival weekend, the city is running measles vaccination at the entry points to Rio — the airports and the bus terminal — and at crowd points such as the Copacabana promenade. Epidemiological monitoring runs for four weeks before and after the festival.
You will not be turned away for declining. But if your MMR record is a question mark, sorting it out at home is a better use of ten minutes than sorting it out in an arrivals hall.
The clock, one more time
Gates open at 2 p.m. The last entry is at midnight — if a headliner you want goes on at 1 a.m., you still have to be through the gate before twelve. The site closes at 2 a.m. The event is rated 16+, and under-16s need a parent or a guardian over 18 carrying a signed responsibility form and ID.
Seven nights across two weekends: 4, 5, 6 and 7 September, then 11, 12 and 13. The 7th is Brazilian Independence Day, a national holiday falling on a Monday this year, so the city is already in a holiday mood before the gates open.
If you are still deciding
As of 1 September the official site still lists tickets as on sale. A standard Gramado day pass is R$ 870 full price, R$ 435 at the half-price rate under Brazilian student and senior rules, and the elevated Comfort Zone area is R$ 1.950. There is no service fee — the price you see is the price you pay — and the set times for every stage are now published.
The full breakdown — what a ticket includes, what it costs in dollars, the bag policy, and which night to pick if you only pick one — is in our Rock in Rio 2026 visitor guide.
And if the festival is the anchor of a longer trip, the rest of the week is the part people improvise badly. Our Rio de Janeiro Trip Planner is 23 pages of day-by-day planning pages, budget sheets and neighbourhood notes, fillable on screen or printable — written by someone who has spent every one of his 52 years in this city.

Three Things That Make the Journey Home Bearable
The city published the routes. It did not publish what the four in the morning queue for the shuttle feels like. These three help.
- Anker Nano 45W power bank — The ride app, the cashless card and the route map all live on the same battery.
- Loop Experience 2 ear plugs — Wear them through the night and the exit queue is a conversation, not a headache.
- ANYOO hooded rain poncho — Folds to nothing, and the queue for transport has no roof.
Three small things, none of them heavy, all of them the difference between a good night and a long one.
